Roleplay Terms

fuckyeahroleplayadvice:

Here is the rebloggable version of the RP Terms page! Note that a lot of these terms are universal and only a few are particular to tumblr.

This list will be updated periodically/as questions are asked/terms brought up.

The list is in alphabetical order.

Activity (1/10) — On roleplay applications, this is to let the people know how active you will be on the website posting. Very little free time = 1-3. Two to three posts a week, 4-6. More free time than most, higher numbers.

Admin — The ‘manager’ or person in charge of the roleplay, group, blog, etc.

AU — Alternate Universe. The world that strays from the canon either slightly or entirely.

Canon — The original source information (TV show, book, etc.) that the characters came from.

Closed Roleplay — The thread/roleplay is closed off to outsiders and is only welcome to those that are mentioned and already involved.

Doubling — When you and your partner both play one female AND one male. Most often used as a courtesy when both players do not want to play a specific gender.

Face Claim — The “face” of your character. The celebrity, actor, anime character that is used to portray the appearance of your character.

Fade To Black — Often used within sexual scenes where the players end/skip a scene, though the actions are thought to be played out despite not being typed, and the scene picks back up after the skipped scene would have ended.

Fan Character — An original character created in a canon world.

Fluff — 1. Fluff is when you add additional, though probably unnecessary, information in a post to make it longer/match a partner’s post length.

2. Fluff in romance roleplays/shipping is when there are scenes that probably do not progress the plot forward in any way, and are more or less there for the two characters to interact in a lovey-dovey manner/do cute, sweet things together.

Future Week — When, in a roleplay, the roleplay jumps into the future a decade or more, but only for one week.

GIF Chat — Explained [here] with an example.

Godmodding — A character whose abilities are limitless. Often acts of forcibly causing something to happen, i.e. making someone else’s character move without consent, is godmodding.

Headcanon — Something that the individual or fandom believes to be true in the story, show, etc. and it generally makes sense, but hasn’t been confirmed by the creators of the media. More or less, a ‘personal’ canon.

Het — Abbreviation used for heterosexual.

IC — In character. That relating to what occurs in game/post by the characters.

Indie — Independent. Usually mean a roleplay blog that is not tied to a roleplay group.

M!A — Magic!Anon. Used when asking a character a question anonymously. The Magic!Anon has the ‘ability’ to make the character do or become anything.
For example: M!A You are now a rabbit for a day!
The character will then respond with a post to this.

Mainverse — The main universe in which the character is played.

Mary Sue/Gary Stu — Used to describe a character that is often times ‘perfect’ in every way, is capable of upstaging other characters no matter what, they can pick up on any task and master it in no time, etc. Usually a perfected self-insert.

MC — Abbreviation for main character.

Mod— The ‘manager’ or person in charge of the roleplay, group, blog, etc.

Moniker — A nickname or alias, often used by the roleplayer.

MPreg — Male Pregnancy. A character or roleplay allowance that sees males becoming pregnant as acceptable and is used for the roleplay.

Multi-Para/Novella — Multiple Paragraphs of post length, often stemming from 3 paragraphs to way beyond this.

Multiple Storyline Character — A character in which the events of one thread have absolutely no effect on the events in another thread in anyway, shape, or form, and are known to be played out in completely different universes regardless of any similarities. Each partner has their own universe that is played with said character, so the events with another partner do not interfere with others.

Multishipping — Coincides with Multiple Storyline Character, in which the romantic involvement which one character in one thread does not interfere or coincide with the romantic relationship with another character in an entirely different thread. This means that a character can have as many relationships as they would like, as each one is in a different universe and none of the partners know of the others’ existence in anyway, shape, or form.

Mun — The person behind the character. A.K.A the roleplayer.

Muse — Often referred to either the player’s character, or things that inspire the player.

Musings — For roleplay, it is a post (text post usually) that relates to the character in some way. It is often something that they may think or think about, used to describe something through their world view, etc.

MU/MUSH — Multi User Simulated Hallucination. Often related to roleplayers of MMORPGS such as World of Warcraft.

Mutual — Specifically for Tumblr. This is when you follow someone’s blog, but they also follow you back.

NPC — Non-playable character. This is when the player controls the actions of a character that may not be tied to the story permanently, such as pedestrains, waiters, office workers, etc. These may also be side characters that are tied to the story, though only played and controlled by one player.

NSFW — Not Safe For Work. Any material that would not be suitable outside of private viewing.

OC — Original Character. One that is not related in any canon material. Made up by the player.

Omegaverse — Best explained [here] due to length.

One Line — One sentence of post length.

OOC — Out of Character. Discussions that are done between the players and do not directly consist of the actions happening in the game.

Open Post — Used specifically on tumblr, but could regard an open thread on a forum as well. This means that the post made is open for anyone to reply to so that a roleplay is started. Sometimes, more than one person is allowed to join, which is specified either in the title of the post, or in the tags.

OTP — One True Pairing. Players personal favorite pair of love between characters.

Para — Five to six sentences of post length.

PB or PlayBy —The “face” of your character. The celebrity, actor, anime character that is used to portray the appearance of your character.

PSA — Public Service Announcement. Generally used when making an important or should-be-wide-spread announcement for followers, groups, or people beyond those looking at your blog.

RFP — Used in roleplay applications. Players example audition posts are removed once accepted and in it’s place is RFP or Removed For Privacy.

RP — Roleplay.

RPG — Roleplay Game/Group.

Self-insert — A character that resembles the mun via personality, looks etc. and is, generally, an exact reflection of the mun.

Seme — In erotic manga (or ‘hentai’), it relates to the person who is the ‘top’ in the bedroom, or has a more dominant personality.

Semi-Para — Three sentences of post length.

Semi-Selective — When a roleplayer will sometimes be choosy with who they decide to roleplay with. Out of person A, B, and C, they may roleplay with B and C, but decide not to roleplay with A for whatever reason.

Ship/Shipping — Short for relationship. The act of shipping two characters together is to engage the two of them in an official relationship. The thought of shipping two characters together is approval of the thought of the two engaging in a relationship.

Slash — Refers to the same-sex pairing of characters.

Smut — The writing of erotica/18+ material. Smut involves sexual intercourse, oral sex, handjobs, etc.

Starter — The opening/beginning post of the roleplay. The very first post of the roleplay, to ‘start’ it.

T1, T2, and T3 — Post explaining all three found [here].

Thread — The collection of posts and responses from the start or continuation of the roleplay.

Uke — In erotic manga (or ‘hentai’), it relates to the person who is the ‘bottom’ in the bedroom, or has a more submissive personality.

UST — Unresolved Sexual Tension

Verse — ‘Universe’ or the world in which the roleplay is set.

Ways to Shock Your Characters (and Your Readers)

ghouliish:

fictionwritingtips:

Boring stories are often boring because they lack tension. If your story doesn’t quite pack the punch you wish it did, you should take a look at how much tension you’re creating. It’s important to remember that you don’t need an explosive scene to create tension; it could also be something simple. As long as you stay true to your characters and plot, you’ll be able to build scenes that will put your readers on the edge of their seats. Here’s a few ways to jolt your characters to the next level:

Make them question their beliefs

Nothing shocks your characters quite like giving them an identity crisis. If a character has believed something for a long time only to find out they’ve been misinformed or lied to, their world shatters. If you can make your character question who they really are, you’ll add tension and intrigue your readers. You’ll also succeed in giving your character the motivation to figure things out.  The need for self-understanding is often a good motivational factor and will shock your characters into action.

Raise the stakes

The best way to add tension to your story is to raise the stakes. Say your character needs to get something from your antagonist, but you don’t know how to make it more exciting. Add something to it that will make your character need to act right away. Maybe the world will end in three days if your character can’t get whatever they need to get. Put a time limit on something. Force them into acting fast. There are countless ways you can raise the stakes for your characters, so you can come up with something that will fit your story.

Take away something they love

A great way to shock your characters is to take something away from them that means a lot. However, be careful not to create a character just to die for motivational purposes. For example, setting up a weak love interest and then having them die, so that the main character will want revenge. Try to focus on something that will help with your protagonist’s characterization. Say your main character really loves their job and they’re climbing up the ranks, but then suddenly they get fired and they don’t know what to do next. You’ve taken away something they love and understand and also made them question their beliefs and their place in the world. You can add more to this. Maybe the antagonist got them fired. This might motivate them to seek revenge. These are just simple examples, but taking away something important to a character will help add tension.

RP Icon Sources

neuroticurls:

lilylunawrites:

100x100 icons have become  popular in the community lately, and I just wanted to list some icon sources that will hopefully make finding icons for your FC much easier! I mostly only included places with a decent-sized, organized directory/tag system. All of these places are off-site because everyone usually checks their FC’s icon tags first, but a lot of people don’t know about insanejournal, dreamwidth, or livejournal icon communities. As an added bonus, many of these places have icons of underused FCs and sort their icons by ethnicity, hair color, eye color, and age, so you might find some new favorite FCs here! I’ll update this as time goes on; let me know if you know any other good sources!

I was about to get really mad because I thought you were gonna say shit about people that are just trying to make some kind of living but then I read that and thank you so much for actually caring

Reposting again…even though i did a few days ago.

i love my company cause we hire felons. one guy was still locked up and got to leave and work for us during the days. now he is doing well and still with us at the grill. and another dude has a tear drop tattoo and looks so hard but he is the one to yell at the other guys when they make sexist remarks, and he is supporting both his daughters.

Ahh yes, The dreaded school. When it comes around we all dread, new teachers, new schedule, some new unfamiliar faces, the MASSIVE amount of homework load, less time on tumblr. Here is another long post with a few sites and others to help you out here!

TIPS:

  1. Remember that today’s day in age is different from how it was back then. So don’t stress about school too much.High school students today have the anxiety of what a mental patient in the insane asylum had in the 50s. Here’s also a thing to show how times have changed.
  2. Prioritize. List what needs to get done first and when. Sometimes getting the bigger/harder tasks is easier than conquering the smaller/easier tasks.
  3. Set times when certain projects need to be done and stick to that deadline.
  4. Turn your phone off or give it to your parents while doing work/studying. I know that we live in the age of technology and literally everything is at the touch of our fingertips. Honestly though you can wait on what your favorite celebrity has to say or if your crush liked your instagram photo. You’ll be more involved in that than you are into your work.
  5. If you have trouble in a certain subject and there is no assigned seating, take advantage of the front. I guarantee you’ll learn more.
  6. Ask your teacher what exactly you’ll need to know. If you’re taking notes during the year, write in the margins whether or not it will be tested. It will be easier to know what you will be tested on.
  7. Save your exams. Half the time your teachers use the same questions (or questions similar) from your exams on your midterms or finals.
  8. Don’t try to do homework straight afterschool if you can’t, despite what everyone says. Give yourself an hour, and try to get some exercise in. I find it stops me getting bored of sitting down. Not to mention helps me concentrate better.
  9. Don’t just read the material, write it, draw it, recite it, quiz yourself on it! Until you have the material down.
  10. Join clubs, sports, or organizations! You’re guaranteed to find friends in there. You’ll already have common interests. Start with that and go with the flow.
  11. College kids: If you don’t have assigned seating, and you have been sitting in the same seat for 2 weeks. That is you assigned seat now. Don’t move or you’ll screw everyone up and they will hate you.
  12. Color code things, such as your notes. If you want to see how I color code my notes message me and I’ll be happy to show you
  13. Be kind to one another.

I think that about does it. So yeah:)

roleplaying tips: weight and height.

mikeysrph:

now, when creating a wonderful character, weight and height ultimately ends up falling somewhere in the category of your characters physical traits. unfortunately, this has been a bit of an issue as some people don’t seem to be giving their characters the correct weights according to the height.

someone who is six foot, cannot be 100 lbs. it is possible to be six foot and 130 lbs, but your character might end up looking as skinny as a string bean. so, i’ve decided to provide a chart, which will give you the correct measurements. of course, if your character happens to have some kind of disorder, then that’s a different story. although, just know you should not be making your character so skinny that it’s physically impossible for them to be alive.
